19-Year History of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene

The history of the “Korean Dental Hygiene Society” began on May 27, 2000, under the name “Korean Academy of Dental Hygiene Education,” and 19 years have passed since it became the “Korean Dental Hygiene Society.”

First, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the support and love from all the presidents, industry, academia, research institutes, and members who contributed to the development of the “Korean Dental Hygiene Society.”

It is a very difficult process for any organization to establish its system It is impossible without the sacrificial effort of a pioneer and requires constant effort. Also difficult is the task to draw the consensus of the members for many years and the cooperation of the members for compliance. However, today our Society has come a long way.

One of the most obvious grounds for the growth and development of the Society is the increase in membership. In terms of membership growth, the number increased steadily, starting with 194 at the time of its founding to well over 300 now, 19 years later.

Further, publication of the journal may be the most fundamental obligation and authority of the Society. Members publish their findings through the academic journal, and the Society secures not only the publication and distribution of the journal but also the resources necessary for the operation by establishing and operating a system that provides fair and just publication.

The Society’s journal was named “Journal of the Korean Society for Oral Health Promotion” in the beginning. Currently, papers from among those submitted to the “Korean Dental Hygiene Society” are reviewed and published. As of 2017, the journal was published six times in a year and was selected as a candidate for registered journals of the Korean Research Foundation in December 2008.

Without the efforts of the pioneers who created something out of nothing, the 17th anniversary would not have been such a joy.

If the publication of the journal is an axis that supports the Society, academic events, including the general conference, are another axis that provides a meeting place for members through practical activities of the Society.

The history of academic conferences held by the Society began with the first academic conference after the founding general meeting on December 19, 2000, and the Society has held 18 national and international conferences since.

Moreover, 6 subcommittees of the Society are actively carrying out research activities by division, such as symposiums and research presentations.

Because of certain upheavals, there have been moments of difficulty and stagnation, but the Society has steadily overcome all difficulties.

However, we should not rest here. The efforts and enthusiasm accumulated over time will bear good results, and the Society’s journal must be selected as a registered journal of the Korea Research Foundation at the end of this year.

Through this event commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Korean Dental Hygiene Society, I hope for the endless development of the Society, bringing the will for development together and wishing it to be a place of unity and trust.
